PDOL: HONESTY
Artifact: Consulting *obj. 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3
School Counseling Practicum: SCN-600-o502
Reflection: Human Growth and Development (S): Guiding Question: How does the SCIT model sound moral character and integrity by their words and actions?
As I reflect on the artifact relative to this assignment, I am reminded of the embedded video clip. The example provided is that of a king giving children a seed to plant. They are tasked to grow it to the best of their ability. The kind intentionally gave seeds that would not grow. However, all the children except one returned with a beautiful flower. It was the HONESTY of the one who returned with an empty pot. He was brave enough to tell the truth.
Reflecting on my personal experiences and ongoing learning as a school counselor in training (SCIT) for the dispositional value of honesty with ethical and professional standards, I reminisce on a moment in 2024 when conflict ensued with a peer teacher. At that moment, I felt out of control and angry. My principal reminded me of who I am and referenced my life of prayer. I can honestly say that it took those words to calm my spirit. I learned from that experience that my life is on display and how I respond is what makes me a “Christian”. I can also honestly admit that it took a wonderful friend to help me see what was truly happening. It is my perspective that moments like these are molding me into the counselor God desires. Understanding my progress from then until now, I can see that all things truly work together for my good, even when it does not feel so good.
I can also share some insights into my development as a SCIT as I strive to demonstrate honesty. I have learned to adapt my responses to suit the needs of my students. I strictly follow ethical guidelines so that anything I say will be helpful and not harmful. I think this is what has developed me also, as I only desire to communicate the truth. My internships have allotted me many opportunities to consistently grow in this area of honesty.
An area for further growth and development is an enhanced emotional understanding. What I mean is improvement in my ability to understand and respond to emotional cues and recognize cultural differences in emotional expression. Communication styles are different, and sometimes I find it difficult to know how to probe further. My goal is to work more on the ability to remember and utilize context from the previous interactions so that I can anticipate the needs and be more proactive. I feel I can then provide resources based on the goals and interests of the student. I will continue to work in these areas and grow by providing honest, empathetic, and authentic support.
ASCA Standard:

I engage in continuous learning by staying up to date with best practices. Through these simple steps, I maintain the trust and respect required in my professional role.
ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors:
B. I take the responsibilities of parents/guardians, school, and staff seriously. I communicate openly and honestly. I respect the confidentiality of the information that is shared with me. I also collaborate to support students' academic, career, and social/emotional development.
CACREP Standard:

I feel I have learned to network with other professionals within the field and learned strategies for effective advocacy. The practical experience in my internships has allowed me to practice advocacy skills in a real-world setting.
